Girls Varsity Basketball
Hyde Phoenix 22
Valley Cavaliers 40
The Valley Cavaliers traveled down from Bingham and defeated the Hyde Phoenix soundly 40-22. While the game was close for most of the first half, the Cavaliers outscored the Phoenix 23-11 in the second half to pull away to victory. The young Phoenix team struggled to find a working chemistry in this game which has been an ongoing theme thus far in the early season. Finding 5 girls to play with a 100% energy and focus at the same time on the court has been the team’s Achilles heel thus far, but the ladies will not give up until they find the right combination. Inspiration has come from some, especially So. Lutes Bartlett who works hard in every practice and who shows constant signs of improvement as evidenced by a career high of 5 points scored against Valley. Sr. Co-Captains Emma Leonard and Carolyn Moore also can be counted on to give every bit of their energy and passion to the collective efforts of the team as they continue to develop their own individual talents. Leonard continues to display a shooter’s mentality as she was quick to take the open jump shots versus Valley netting 6 points. Moore continues to carry the load in terms of leading the offense as a point guard and heading up our defensive efforts, and she is also being challenged by her coaches to assert herself more as a scorer. Sophomores Kelsey Talbutt and Kristine Bailey each played much of the game vs Valley and are showing constant signs of improvement which is encouraging. With all respect to the wonderful presence of our seniors, this is a young team made up mostly of underclassmen which bodes well for the future of the women’s basketball program. With that said, the immediate challenge for this team is to find its identity and make the most of this season. As a team, we are not pleased with the results of our young season, but we will remain committed to hard work and our pride in representing Hyde.
