Hyde-Woodstock traveled to Bath, Maine on Wednesday to face-off against its sister school. This has been a tradition every December before break and has even become coined as the “Winter Classic.” Pitting both JV and Varsity wrestlers against one another in the theater, this match-up is exciting and showcases Hyde sportsmanship and camaraderie. The past two years, Hyde-Bath has bested us in the Winter Classic, and this year was no different.
After a riveting JV match that ended with a close victory for Bath, the Wolfpack grapplers hoped to clinch a Varsity win towards the President’s Cup. We came out strong initially with wins and pins by Markus Rhyner ’16, Paul Randall ’15, Marcos Mercado ’14, and Will Kuphal ’15. These four pins earned us an early lead, but Bath has always been stronger in the heavier weights. With the exception of Dylan Marx ’14, who earned a win by decision at the 160lb weight class, we lost at the 152, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285 weight classes by pins or forfeit. These losses boosted Bath’s score and secured the win for the Phoenix. Although we lost the match, all the wrestlers showed the grit and determination of true Hyde wrestlers. A special shout out to Bath for hosting a great match and it was nice seeing the faculty and students up there. The Wolfpack also hopes to best Bath the next time we see them in our annual quad meet against Deerfield and Andover.
With a nice break ahead, the wrestlers will rest up and prepare for the season to come. Thanks for everyone’s support and Happy Holidays from all of us at Hyde School.
