The Hyde Phoenix Varsity Wrestlers hit the road Friday for a long weekend of wrestling in Massachusetts and emerged from the fray with a 3-2 record (4-2 overall).
Friday night, Hyde wrestled Governor’s Academy to a 48 – 24 victory with juniors James Lee (113) and Hang Zhao (126)providing lightweight victories, junior 145 Tenzin Crane and senior Captain Darvin Anderson (160) earning falls in the middle weights, and senior Captain Jared Jensen capturing a pin at 182 pounds. In the second bout of the night, against perennial ISL League contender Roxbury Latin, the Boys from Bath took our lumps from a more experienced team (49 – 18), though the score does not reflect the effort or tenacity of the Phoenix on the mat.
On Saturday, we travelled to Milton Academy to renew our annual rivalries with the host Mustangs, the Rams of Tilton School, and the undefeated Spartans of Lawrence Academy. Hyde cruised to victory over Class A League opponent Tilton School on the strength of 3 matches to 1 in contested bouts. This is a rebuilding year for our friends at Tilton and we look forward to seeing them return to prominence soon.
Against Lawrence Academy, the action was fast and furious in the 113 pound bout before James Lee gutted out a huge win by pin midway through the third period of action! Though overmatched y his Lawrence foe, Tenzin Crane battled the entire bout and forced his opponent to settle for a technical fall victory, and the 1 team point difference would be telling. Hang Zhao and Darvin Andersontook care of business in workmanlike fashion at 126 and 152 respectively. Junior Jake Deutschlander racked up an impressive number of points before hitting a massive throw for the pin, effectively sealing the Phoenix Victory. In the final bout, Senior Captain Jared Jensen faced off against defending New England Champion and National Place winner Isiah Bellamy of Lawrence. Despite Jared’s first loss of the season, the Phoenix handed the Spartans their first loss of the season by the score of 42 – 41.
In the final dual of the day, Hyde faced the Host Milton Mustangs. We couldn’t overcome their depth and had to settle for a 51 – 36 loss.
As we prepare to host the Wolfpack of Hyde – CT on Wednesday in our annual Winter Classic with the Hyde President’s Cup hanging in the balance, the Phoenix are rapidly coming together as a team and the effort and learning attitudes of new wrestlers in the varsity lineup has been tremendous. Special recognition has to go to freshman Grayson Jones (132) and Evan Davis (195) who can count their days of experience on two hands but are giving it all they have every day. Juniors Hang Zhao and Jake Deutschlander will greet the Wolfpack with unblemished records on Wednesday as we look for a Phoenix “W” in both the JV and Varsity dual meets.
