The Phoenix Wrestlers of Hyde School welcomed the Shipbuilders of Morse High to the Joe Gauld Student Life Center last night for the 2013 Battle of Bath. It was an exciting first competition for Hyde after a mere 2 days of practice. The energy level was high, and when the dust settled, the Phoenix emerged victorious by the score of 36 – 24.
Making their wrestling debut last night, junior Dow Drukker and sophomores Zach Harrison and Kevin Weng were valiant in their efforts though they finished on the losing end of things. They will step onto the mat again after 4 days of practice this weekend – who knows how things will turn out!
With the team score decidedly in the Shipbuilders’ favor, the heart of the Phoenix lineup took to the mat. Senior Darvin Andersonsurvived a few close calls against Morse’s Hunter Reed before securing the pin with just 9 seconds remaining in the match. Junior Jake Deutschlander put on an offensive clinic before securing a third period pin, and seniors Jared Jensen and Jack Howarth followed suit with first period pins of their own. Sophomore Ross Ji earned his first varsity win with a first period pin as well!
Though Hyde senior Eliot Wang fell in the final bout of the evening, the final score stood at 36 – 24 and the Phoenix had won the Battle.
Hats off to the Shipbuilders! This has been a great rivalry for year! The Phoenix return to competition with a JV meet at Belmont Hill School in MA on Saturday while the varsity team opens their season in a tri meet at Governor’s Academy in MA on Friday the 13th.
