Hyde School: 1
Hebron Academy: 1
Hebron Academy traveled to Bath yesterday to play the final regular season match. It was played on the turf field under mostly sunny skies with strong south east winds.
Hyde played into the wind for the first half of the match and had difficulty playing the ball out of the back. This contributed to the Lumberjacks significantly out shooting the Phoenix in the first 45 minutes of play. Hyde was on their heels for a majority of that time. But solid play by centerback Andrew Davis`15, paired with great goalkeeping by Noah Horning`15 managed to keep the score 0-0 at the break.
Hyde refocused and made a few tactical changes which involved moving Wilson MacMillan`14 from forward to the midfield, winger Ben Mooney`16 shifted to forward and Cole Faulkner`15 went from center mid to the left wing. This combination coupled with having the wind at their backs proved significant. Center midfielders Wilson MacMillan`14 and Kiefer Cundy`15 were able to move the ball around more effectively and created numerous scoring opportunities as a result. In the 48th minute of play Cole Faulkner`15 scored a beautiful unassisted goal from the left side, just outside the box. This lifted the Phoenix and spurred them on. In the ensuing 30 minutes, the pace and ball possession were predominantly controlled by Hyde. However, with 8 minutes remaining, Hebron scored to even the match. Hyde pushed forward, remaining offensively minded, trying to break the knot, but were unable to do so.
Sometimes a tie feels like a win, sometimes it feel like a tie, and sometimes, it stings like a loss. Unfortunately, this one stung a bit. This notwithstanding, it was a very good season; 7 wins, 5 ties and 1 loss. The team is looking forward to doing their best in the upcoming post season which starts Wednesday, November 6th with the MAISAD semi-final match.
