Flags and Attitude: Phoenix JV Football Lose a Tough Game to Exeter’s Big Red

Team:  Junior Varsity Football

Date:   Oct 30, 2013

Score:  Hyde:  8

Phillips Exeter Academy: 20

The Big Red of Exeter arrived at the Phoenix Field ready to play.  Hyde took the opening kick-off and went three and out.  Two plays later Red #85 Steven Akimar rambled 18 yards to punch it over the goal line at the 7:09 mark of the first to take the lead 0 – 6.  Hyde then took possession on their own 27 yard line.  Ten minutes and 19 plays later behind the running of Jake Deutschlander ’15 (8 carries for 24 yards) could not they finish, giving the ball over to Exeter on a 4th and 13 on the Exeter 24 yard line.  Exeter then drove the ball 65 yards to the Hyde 24 yard line.  On a 4th and 3 the Phoenix Big-D stuffed the run and took possession.  Hyde took over on their 24 yard line and on the next play turned it back to the Big Red on the 49!  A minute and 51 seconds later Exeter completed a 16 yard TD pass from QB #23 Tyrek Graves to tight end James Redding to close the first half scoring with the Big Red on top 0 – 12.  It was a short halftime with not a lot of talk … a lot of listening.

They heard.  The defense lead by Omar Harris ’14 (7 tackles) and Sam Zanta ’15 (6 tackles, 2 sacks and a fumble recovery) and Ryan Moran ’15 (4 tackles, 1 sack and 2 fumble recoveries) stopped the Exeter offense.  Omar Harris ’14 (11 carries for 68 yards) then thundered up the middle on a 13 yard run to the end zone.    Harris punched in the 2 point conversion and closed the gap to 8 – 12 with 7:31 to go in the 3rd.   Exeter drove from the 20 to the Hyde 45, and then stalled as Sam Zanta and Andrew Martz (5 tackles on the day) stuffed the run and pass.  Their punt fared no better as it was blocked by a swarm of blue with Moran scooping the loose ball. Flags, sacks and stopped the Phoenix.  Exeter then fumbled and turned it over on their 31 yard line…Hyde Fumbled it back on the very next play and the 3rd quarter ended with Exeter on top 8 – 12.

Exeter worked the air and ground, but again a few Phoenix (Martz, Harris and Austin Makris ’15) stifled their attack with Ryan Moran sacking the QB and on the next play recovering his second fumble.  With 6:51 to go in the game Hyde took possession on the Exeter 48!  Seven plays later Hyde could only get to the 41 yard line and the drive fizzled on a 4 and 16 sack by Big Red.  Zach Messina ’15 (6 tackles on the day) stopped the QB on a sweep, Martz made a great hit to bring up a 3rd and 12 for Exeter.

#23 Tyrek Graves then called his own number and swept off tackle for 52 yards and the score.  Akimar added the 2 point and the score widened to 8 – 20 with 2:56 to go in the game.

Hyde drove the ball 21 yards behind Evan Robish ’14 (7 for 14 for 66 yards) connected with Greg Kidger ’17 for 3 catches and on a 4th and 15, it looked like the Robish to Kidger connection would take the Phoenix within 14 yards of the goal line with 2:14 to go…but called back with a flag.

Exeter took over on the 36 yard line and took a knee to end the game.
