Phoenix Clip Falcons’ Wings: JV Football vs. Freeport High

Team:  Future Varsity Football

Date:   Oct 21, 2013

Score:  Hyde:  28             Freeport Falcons: 22
It was a great day for a game; sunny and cool with a blue crisp sky and two teams hungry for a win.  Freeport kicked off to the Phoenix and Jake Deutschlander ’15 ran the ball back 72 yards for the score.  He then added the 2 point conversion from QB Evan Robish and Hyde very quickly was on top 8 – 0.

The first half would see the Phoenix, behind the running of Deutschlander control the pace and tone of the game.  Leo Wang ’15 and Bryan Wang ’15 each held their ground as Defensive Ends, While Zach Messina ’15 and Sam Zanta ’15 thwarted the Falcon running backs inside game.  Deutschlander would add 2 more scores (and have 2 TD’s called back due to inexperienced blocking downfield) in the half.  The Hyde offense, even with miscues, ran efficiently as Aidan Sperry ’15 carried for 30 plus yards behind the blocking of Austin Makris ’15 and Ryan Moran ’15. Falcon QB #21 Steven Ridley connected on 2 passes to #47 Greg Keene, but the stubborn “Hyde-D” held the Falcons to 3 first downs and less than 50 yards total offense to close the first half with Hyde in control 22 – 0.

Deutschlander led the defense in tackles and an interception, as Andrew Martz ’14 and Chris Proach ’14 both came up with sacks and several individual tackles while Greg Kidger ’17 and Hang Zhao ’14 each played excellent defense against the pass to thwart the Falcons flight.

The second half saw the stubborn Falcons take to the air and open up a ground game.  Some Phoenix miscues combined with Freeports on-sides kick offs, yielded excellent field postion for the Falcons on which they capitalized to make it a close game 22 – 14 as the third quarter came to a close.  Deutschlander would add another score (4 touchdowns, with over 175 yards rushing on the day) early in the 4th .  However, the Falcons would not go away and scored late in the 4th to keep the score close at 28 – 22 as the final horn sounded.
