Deutschlander’s Stellar Debut Offsets a Tough JV Loss to Lincoln, 13-20

The Hyde Phoenix JV football team suffered its first loss on Monday up in Damariscotta to Lincoln Academy 20-13, but not even defeat could cast a shadow on the amazing debut by Jr. Jake Deutschlander ’15.  After joining the team just days earlier, Deutschlander stepped into the lineup on offense, defense, and special teams and played the game with an incredibly high level of energy and effectiveness.  In addition to making 16 tackles and 1 sack on defense, and rushing for 73 yards on just 4 carries, the highlight of the day was when he returned the second half opening kick-off 85 yards for a touchdown to inject life into the Phoenix team that was shut out in the first half.  The Eagles of Lincoln Academy were a strong bunch who played with intensity and efficiency, and they provided the toughest test so far this year for the younger Phoenix squad.  Sr. Omar Harris ’14 stepped in to provide some experiential leadership on both sides of the ball, especially on offense where he rushed for 90 yards and 1 touchdown on 12 carries.  Overall, it was an incredibly valuable learning experience for the Hyde JV squad, and the Phoenix look forward to the possibility of welcoming back the Eagles for a rematch on our home turf later in the season.

Next up for the JV Football team:    Oct. 21st – Home vs Freeport HS    3:30 pm.
