Battle of Brookline: Phoenix Varsity Football vs. Dexter School

Team:  Varsity Football

Date:   Oct 12, 2013

Score:  Hyde:  28     Dexter School: 38

It was a good day for battle.  Cold and windy, the Phoenix took the field knowing they would have to contend with QB #14 Luke Cuneo and his arsenal of passing weapons.  Dexter took the opening kick-off, and with a pass, an on-side kick and another pass Dexter was on top 16 to zero with 1 minutes and 48 seconds gone in the game.  The Dexter fans were hardly in their seats and they were planning a celebration cookout for after the victory.  Not so fast.  The Phoenix defense rose to the fight and commenced to stop the potent Dexter air attack.  Austin Makris ’15 applied pressured from the defensive line as Omar Harris ’14 and Joe Stanchina ’14 began knocking balls from the sky to slow the assault and in the opening minutes of the second, Jared Jensen ’14 intercepts a pass.  The two dozen Hyde fans go crazy and Dexter fans are suddenly silent as Caleb Jones ‘14 (behind the blocking of Jack Howarth ’14, Jimmy Talbott ’15 and Sam Zanta ’15) drives the ball towards the goal line with Chris Collins ’14 catching a 19 yard TD pass from Evander Lenardson ’14 (9 completions for 231 yards passing with 2 TD’s) with 9:52 to go in the half

This is a dog fight; this is a game, this is exciting as each team thwarts the others attack over the next 9 minutes.  The first half comes to a close with Hyde behind 8 – 16 on the score board, but ahead in the spirit column.  Dexter fans are mumbling “is this the same Hyde team we beat 3 weeks ago?”  How can you confuse a Wolf with a Phoenix!?

Dexter’s QB Cuneo connects with # 11 Owen Martinson to open the scoring in the third at the 8:43 mark to put Dexter on top 22 – 8.  Two minutes later Jared Jensen ’14 (48 yards rushing) punches it in from 9 yards after a solid 72 yard drive by the Phoenix to close the gap 22 – 14.  On the ensuing kick-off, #8 Justin Smith would take the ball 90 yards for the score and the Dexter fans come alive as their team goes up 30 – 14.  Again, Hyde would put together a sustained passing and running 63 yard drive capped with Collin’s (9 catches for 214 yards and 2 TD’s on the day) second TD catch.   The 24 Hyde fans go crazy as the gaps closes to 8 points again; 22 – 30 with 2:27 to go in the third quarter. Dexter came out gunning in the air, driving 67 yards in 6 plays with Luke Cuneo handing off to his brother #4 Matt Cuneo for a 25 yard run off tackle for the 5th Dexter score; 38 – 22 as the 3rd quarter gun sounds.

Jared Jensen returns the kick-off 36 yards to set the Phoenix up 1st and 10 on the Dexter 46.  Six plays later Caleb Jones ’14 (12 carries for 82 yards) behind great blocking from Zach Messina ‘15 and Ryan Moran ’15 rambles 25 yards for the score as the gap is closed to 28 – 38 with 9 minutes to go in the game.  Dexter then methodically runs the ball down the field, eating the clock.  On a 4th and 6 on the Hyde 19, Jensen knocks the ball out of a Dexter receivers hands and the Phoenix take possession on their 19 with 1:32 to go in the game.  A quick score, an on-sides kick and we’re back in it. 5 plays later Dexter intercepts a 4th and 10 pass and after the TD is called back for a Dexter illegal block, QB Cuneo takes a knee to end the battle; Dexter 38 – Hyde 28.
