Character is the Name of the Game
The Huskies of Kent’s Hill School arrived on campus ready to upset the Phoenix in front of a large homecoming crowd. The Phoenix took the opening kickoff and began a drive that would set the tone for the first half. Two first downs gave way to miscues that would hinder the Phoenix throughout the day. At the 8:04 mark of the 1st quarter, Kent’s Hill recovered a bad snap punt fumble and began a drive on the Hyde 33 yard line. On the second play Husky #20 Trenton SirLouis rambled off tackle 15 yards for the TD. Five minutes and 49 yards later Jared Jensen ’14 blasted up the middle behind a nice trap block from senior Jack Howarth for a 5 yard TD to tie the game 6 up.
The second quarter saw both the Phoenix defense and offense begin to click. Decker Adelman ’15 intercepted a Husky pass, Leo Wang ’15 recovered a Kent’s Hill fumble and Ryan Moran ’15 sacked the Husky QB. Meanwhile Jensen (13 carries for 158 yards and 2 TD’s on the day with 11 tackles) scored his second TD on a 24 yard rumble off tackle behind tackle Sam Zanta ’15 and tight end Chris Collins ’14. Qb Captain Evander Lenardson’14 (4 for 6 for 63 yards and a passing TD with 7 carries for 47 yards) added another score at the 7:28 mark on a QB Keep off tackle. Hyde would lose a fumble in the end-zone to a touchback near the end of the second quarter to go into half time with a 20 – 6 lead.
Play tough, play with heart and play with character was the halftime message. The third quarter then saw the motivated Huskies dominate the offensive clock for all but 32 seconds of the 12 minute period. The defense bent…but never broke. Hyde finally got the ball at the 10:47 mark in the fourth and 2 minutes later Chris Collins ’14 (three catches for 51 yards and 1 TD with 6 sacks and 6 tackles on the day) capped a 4 play 64 yard scoring drive with a 9 yard catch from Lenardson. Collins caught the two point conversion and the Phoenix extended the lead to 28 – 6. Three minutes later Husky SirLouis notched his second score to close the gap 28 – 12. Three minutes later Hyde answered with a 7 play 54 yard drives capped off with another blast up the middle, this time by Caleb Jones ’14 (4 carries for 12 yards and 1 TD with 3 sacks and 9 tackles) and Decker Adelman ’15 added the point after to close the scoring and the game 35 – 12.
The Hyde linemen held the Husky offense to only 22 yards on the ground while allowing the Phoenix to fly with over 217 yards on the ground.
