Phoenix Varsity Football vs. Proctor Academy, Sept 28 2013

Varsity Football

Date:   Sept 28, 2013

Score:  Hyde:  21             Proctor Academy: 29

After a long bus ride to the mountains of New Hampshire, the Phoenix came ready to play.  Hyde took the opening kickoff and drove 81 yards in 9 plays capping the drive with a 48 yard halfback pass from Jared Jensen ‘14 to Joe Stanchina ’14 touch down. Deker Adelman ’14 added the point after and Hyde was on top 7 – 0.  The Hyde defense held strong, recovering a fumble and several tackles for losses to stymie the Hornet offense.  At the 9:45 mark in the second quarter Jared Jensen ’14 (15 carries for 91 yards and 1 TD pass completion on the day) rambled 6 yards capping a 68 yard drive for Hyde’s second score and with another Adelman kick the score was now 14 – 0.  Seven minutes later Proctor took over procession on an interception by #4 Nathan Kyeame and two plays later #39 Hunter Luhmann dove in from the 2 yard line.  #11 Joel Villa added the 2 point conversion and the Hornets began to buzz.  Hyde 14 – Proctor 8 at half time.

Proctor took the second half kick off and on a 3rd down and 15 pass, Omar Harris ’14 intercepted and sprinted 22 yards for the score.  Silence came from the Hornet nest.  Again the Hyde defense held tough on a 4th and 9 from its own 14 yard line and took possession with 7:10 to go in the 3rd.  Hyde’s Caleb Jones ’14 (13 carries for 65 yards) led the team with 10 tackles while Chris Collins ’14 (5 catches for 78 yards) added 3 unassisted tackles from D-End and in his first game back Austin Makris ’15 had two tackles and effectively forced the Hornets to an outside running game.  The line-backing corps of Jack Howarth ’14 (4 tackles), Sean Smerczynski ’14 (6 tackles) and Zach Messina ’15 (4 tackles) found themselves busy chasing down Hornets all over the field.   The Hyde defense would find themselves on the field most of the second half.

From their own 14, Hyde’s quick offense drove the ball to the 32 yard line when Hornet #27 intercepted a pass and with 4:57 to go, the Hornets were knocking again from the 28 yard line.  Three plays later Hornet QB #12 Sam Barrett (99 yards passing and 10 yards rushing) sprinted off tackle 10 yards for the Hornet TD and with the extra point, Hyde’s lead shrank to 21 – 15.   On the next snap, Hyde fumbled and the Hornets were buzzing at the Hyde 39 yard line.  Six plays later # 3 Kedron Banks sprinted 9 yards on a reverse and into the end zone to tie the game 21 – 21.

The fourth quarter witnessed both teams battle defensively with sacks and interceptions to thwart their opponent’s offense.   With 2:39 to go in the game the Hornets found themselves on the Hyde 19 yard line.  #4 Nathan Kyeame sprinted off tackle and swept 19 yards for the score.  He then added the 2 point conversion to put the Hornets on top 29 – 21 with 2:02 remaining in the game.  On a 4th and 15 with 1:50 to go, Hyde came up short and the Hornets took possession and a knee to end the game.

Wherever you are, that is where you went.
