The JV boys soccer squad hosted Hebron Academy on a cool afternoon this past Wednesday. Unfortunately, the JV were left with a skeleton crew after some injuries and missing players, but the 14 players that showed up did what they could. The play was back and forth for the first 20 minutes of play. A direct kick from roughly 40 yards out bounced through the 18 box and found its way to the back of the net. The Phoenix stepped up their play and came back with high energy. Junior Joey Romo played tough-nose defense in the “rover” role. Romo ’15 was aggressive all over the pitch, stopping Hebron advances and chasing down runners. Hebron would later make another play in the 18, but Evan Davis would be saved by the upright. The Lumberjacks would be up 1-0 at the half.
Sophomores Aidan Bristow and Evans Kegame would be very helpful at the outside midfield positions in the second half. But an early second goal by Hebron would prove deflating for the JV Hyde Phoenix. The teams would challenge each other for some more of the second half, but mistakes on defense were capitalized on by the Lumberjacks. The second half did see the Phoenix get on the scoreboard when Akim Sanni ’15 would find the back of the net on a nice strike from the corner of the 18 yard box. This would not be enough for the JV squad, Hebron was already locked-in for the win.
The Lumberjacks would tack on a few more goals by the end of the match. The final would be 8-1 for Hebron Academy. The JV soccer boys are still trying to put together a full 80 minutes of soccer. They will travel to Gould Academy for their next match.
