Beginning September 20, the Hyde Bath campus held an event-filled couple of days to kick-off the season with our first Fall Phoenix Weekend. Open to alumni and parents, the weekend was created to give students and faculty a chance to generate excitement and energy for our Fall sports season. The weekend also gave the opportunity for current students and parents to spend time with alumni and Hyde Alumni Parent Association (HAPA) parents as they mingled around the refreshment tables, or watched one of the exciting games that occurred on Saturday. Assistant Head of School Kevin Folan shared about the Fall Phoenix Weekend,
“Hyde is at its best when we have the perfect mix of students, faculty, parents, and alumni on campus. Having all of these groups on campus is always such a highlight for our community because it brings such a cross-section of perspectives on Hyde and on life together. Having our current students and parents talk with alums about their experiences at Hyde, in college, and beyond helps our kids understand the context of a Hyde education in a rapidly changing economy. As an added bonus, big wins by our football, cross country, and men’s soccer teams helped add to the celebratory campus atmosphere.”
The celebration started off Friday night with a spirit rally and bonfire. Each sports team presented their original cheer to the enthusiastic crowd as all enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies. Director of Athletics, Jon Mellinger, gave an inspiring speech that got the gathering of students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni on their feet and cheering.
The next day while many Phoenix teams headed to athletic competitions on fields away, the Hyde Bath Varsity Football team took to our home turf for a rousing game against Kents Hill. Before a crowd of spectators made up of current parents, alumni, HAPA, staff, students and faculty, the team provided a fantastic day of Phoenix football bringing in victory against Kents Hill of 35 to 12.
Mellinger said about our first Fall Phoenix Weekend,
“I thought the weekend was a rousing success. We were able to fire up the student-body in the morning meeting which carried us through the Fall Phoenix Weekend. Our football, cross country, and boys varsity soccer teams notched key wins to start the season, and our other teams showed the resilient Phoenix athletic spirit. After a rigorous preseason schedule, our student-athletes are molding themselves into close-knit teams. I’m looking forward to our pursuit of the postseason.”
