New Hampton 30
On Saturday, the varsity football team traveled to New Hampton, NH, to take on the New Hampton School Huskies. After a tough loss at Dexter, Hyde was looking to regroup and perform better with less mental mistakes and more overall discipline. After a scoreless first quarter, it was clear that Hyde was focused and there to compete. The first score came from New Hampton to give the Huskies a 6-0 lead. However, on their next drive, senior Kenny Grant ’14 intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a score. Todd Jones 14’ added the two point conversion run and the Wolfpack took an 8-6 lead into the half.
The second half was a back and forth affair with each team trying to capitalize on the others’ mistakes. Kyle Jordan ’14 found the end zone in the third quarter to give Hyde a 14-12 advantage. New Hampton then scored twice more to go up 24-14. Then, on the conversion try, Marcus Greenidge ’17 stepped in front of a pass attempt and returned it 98 yards to give Hyde a much needed 2 points. Suddenly down only 8 instead of 10, Hyde rallied and began a potentially game tying drive with six minutes left in the game. On a critical 4th down and 5 at midfield, quarterback Damon Gomes ’15 found Grant across the middle to keep the drive alive. However, an ensuing Hyde fumble gave the ball back to the Huskies who were able to punch in one more insurance touchdown.
It was a valiant effort by the squad. Led by the Post Grad trio of Jones, Jordan, and Khalil Reese ’14, the Wolfpack showed their potential. Hyde is excited to stay in Woodstock this weekend and host the Tilton School Rams at 3pm.
