Phoenix Girls Varsity Soccer Battles Rothesay-Netherwood, Falls 0-2

September 20, 2013

Hyde – 0
Rothesay-Netherwood – 2

The Girls Varsity squad played their first international game against Canadian school Rothesay-Netherwood.  Serving as the home opener for the 2013 season, the game was played under beautiful fall conditions.  Unfortunately, the Phoenix entered the game a little flat and found themselves down by one with fewer than three minutes of time gone past.  The goal served as a rallying point and the team began to organize under solid pressure from a tactically talented opponent.  Rothesay-Netherwood controlled the mid-field and delivered dangerous through balls and flank attacks.  Senior captain Carolyn Moore ’14 led the backfield with the help of Tina Mowry ’14 and Emma Leonard ’14, who played tough marking positions.  The Canadian team was able to notch another goal on a well struck ball with less than five minutes to play in the first half.  The Phoenix left the half down by two.

The second half was a different game.  Play was no longer exclusively on the Hyde end as center midfielder Julia Jackson ’14 began to win control.  Though the Phoenix weren’t able to generate offense, they tipped the scales and played a much more even second half, denying any more goals.
