Tough Loss to Tilton Rams for Phoenix GVS

Hyde Girls Varsity Soccer vs Tilton

September 14, 2012

Hyde – 0

Tilton – 1

The Hyde Phoenix opened their 2013 regular season with a trip west to New Hampshire to face the ever-tough Tilton Rams.  The two teams had faced off a week earlier at the pre-season Berwick Jamboree and left the field in a scoreless tie after 42 minutes of play.  With a week of hard practice, the Hyde girls were ready for round two.

Having lost to the Rams by wide margins in previous years, the Phoenix entered the game in a defensive posture that proved too difficult for Tilton to penetrate.  Led from the back by senior Carolyn Moore ’14 at sweeper, Tilton was unable to generate successful drives.  Tilton mirrored the Hyde strategy and placed their standout player at sweeper, who was near impossible to beat.  The first half ended in a scoreless draw.

The Rams went on the offensive during the second half, moving their strength up the field into a striking position.  Newcomer Tina Mowry ’14 played an incredibly tough game, marking their star and shutting down several scoring attempts.  After 72 minutes of stalemate, Tilton’s striker came through, getting loose at the top of the box and finishing with a low shot.  The final 8 minutes of the game were as hard fought as the preceding 72, as the Phoenix worked hard to find an equalizer.

Stand out play for the Phoenix was exemplified by senior goalkeeper Hope Stinson ’14 who commanded the goal area.  Other outstanding efforts included junior varsity swing player Allison Grover ‘18, varsity mid-fielder Cailin Darling ‘14 and striker Jill Tolman ’16.
