Execution the Name of the Game in Phoenix VF Pre-Season Win, 35-6

Varsity Football

Date:   Sept 11, 2013

Score:
Hyde: 35
Medomak Valley: 6

Medomak Valley travelled south to be hosted by the Phoenix in a Pre – Season game.  After a controlled scrimmage at Kent’s Hill last week, this would be the first game scenario for the Phoenix of the 2013 season.  The first 10 minutes of the game displayed what the Phoenix could accomplish if they executed their game.  Three possessions lead to three touchdowns. The Phoenix could run the ball, pass the ball and hold solid defensive stances.  Caleb Jones ‘14 scored first capping a 5 play, 50 yard drive with an 8 yard run to the end zone with Deker Adelman ’15 added the first of his 5 extra points on the day.  Jared Jensen ’14 (1 catch for 45 yards and 4 carries for 65 yards with 2 TD’s on the day) added two more scores on a run and a pass to close the first period with the Phoenix clearly in control 21 – 0.

Medomak Valley would not quit and settled into a two sustained drives and bowed but did not break to the Phoenix offense in the second quarter.  Although the Phoenix defense recovered two Valley fumbles, the offense was not able to sustain execution and several solid drives were thwarted by penalties and the second period ended the same as the first 21 – 0.

The third quarter saw Medomak go three and out after the kick off with Hyde then driving 38 yards in two plays to the end zone where Chris Collins ’14 (7 catches for 138 yards) notched his first touchdown of the season. Again, both teams performance was marred by execution errors resulting in a back and forth second half.   As the fourth opened, Hyde started a solid drive on their own 45 yard line and drove for the score in 6 plays with quarterback Evander Lenardson ’14 hurtling into the end zone on a 4 yard romp off tackle.  Lenardson ended the day with an 8 for 14 for 183 yards passing and two carries for 18 yards and the TD.  Medomak Valley’s Aaron Stevens capped a 7 play 45 yard drive with a 4 yard TD run at the 1:57 mark of the fourth to close the scoring with Hyde on top 35 – 6.

The offensive and defensive lines both showed improvement from last Saturdays scrimmage especially in the passing venue, and the defensive backfield gained confidence and experience as the game progressed.  This week’s theme will be execution as they prepare to Host the Huskies next Saturday.
