Thornton Academy Outplays Hyde BJVS

Boys JV Soccer vs. Thornton Academy

Hyde: 1; Thornton: 7

The JV soccer boys traveled down the coast to Thornton Academy on Wednesday afternoon.  It was a hot day to play soccer, but the team did their best to work hard in the heat. In the first half, the JV squad came out slow and sluggish, letting in a few quick goals. Some stand-out players from the first half included Ben Klebe ’14Danny Shaw-Vicente ’15, and Alec Chapman ’17.  But a bigger and faster Thornton team kept the ball in Hyde’s defensive third for most of the first half.  The Phoenix went into half time trailing 5-0.

The second half saw the Phoenix ready and eager to put some points on the board.  Strong play in the midfield by Max Kaplan ’15, David Wu ’15, and Lawson Lin ’15 gave Hyde more possession of the ball and chances at net.  Pestering threats to the defense by Frederik Lasson ’15 eventually gave way to a direct kick from 30 yards out.  Once again Ben Mooney ’16 stepped up behind the ball and placed it in the back of the netting, over the keepers’ hands.  Joey Romo ’15, Elliot Wang ’14, and Wyatt Lichtenger ’14 also made significant contributions to the shutting down Thornton’s attack in the second half.

Once again it was a tale of two halves.  The Phoenix came out slow, timid, and unsure of themselves in the first half, but really turned it around in the second half.  The Hyde Phoenix lost to Thornton Academy by a final score of 7-1.  The JV boys have some time to train and develop in the next couple weeks before their next game at Kent’s Hill on the 21st.
