Hyde-Bath Boys JV Soccer Drops Home Opener

Hyde-Bath vs. Chop Point 4-8

On Friday, the Junior Varsity Boys soccer team had their first match up of the year against Chop Point.  The team came out very sluggish and not quite up for the competition. The teams battled back and forth for some time, but Hyde’s defense could not stop the first scoring chance from Chop Point, and they were down a goal 7 minutes into the match. Some miscommunication and a few nice shots by Chop Point forwards, the Phoenix were quickly down 5-0. With about ten minutes left in play, Hyde earned a free kick 30 yards away from the goal. Ben Mooney ’16 approached the ball and hit a strike into the back of the net. The team then elevated its play, and kept the ball in their offensive half, connecting passes and moving the ball with purpose. Hyde went into half time trailing 6-1.

The second half the Phoenix came out in full force. The defense, lead by seniors Ben Fusco ’14and Ben Klebe ’14, donated abundant minutes of play in the backfield. The second half saw much more of Hyde possession in the offensive third of Chop Point, and it wasn’t much later that Ben Mooney found the back of the net again. The BJVS was compiling passes and building up offensive attacks thanks to solid play byAlexy Billon ’14 and Lawson Lin ’15 at the wing midfield positions. The momentum quickly shifted into Hyde’s favor after a pair of quick goals by Max Kaplan ’15 and David Wu ’15.  Kaplan redirected a ball into the back of the net, while Wu quickly did the same on a break-away under the keeper’s arm.

The game was a battle of two completely different halves.  Hyde soccer dominated the last 45 minutes of the match, unfortunately there were 80 minutes of soccer, and the JV team could not make up the deficit established in the first half.  They won the second half 3-2, but at the end of the match the scoreboard read 8-4.  The Boys’ JV soccer team looks to prepare for a short week, they will travel to Thornton Academy on Wednesday for their second match of the year.
