Hyde Woodstock -16
They Hyde Lady Phoenix travelled down to Woodstock on Saturday to take on the Wolfpack. We came out strong with Suzanna McManus #1 scoring the first goal of the game. From there, the Wolfpack’s leading scorer, A. Donolly #10, had two quick goals, but were returned with equal force by Jillian Tolman #22, and McManus #1 again, each putting one in the back of the net. The Phoenix ladies worked hard to organize the defense and stop the fast breaks to the best of their ability, while Julia Jackson #4 made use of her speed in the last two minutes of the half, leaving the score 6-4 at the break.
The girls came out hot in the second half with Carolyn Moore #14 controlling the draws and scoring two goals in the first minute. We pulled ahead by one when Allie Helfrich #8 used her stick maneuvering and finesse to put our seventh goal of the game in the opponents net. Although our ability to generate offense showed signs of improvement, the Phoenix struggled to shut down the top scorer from the pack, Donolly #10. Tia Bauer-Hummel #17 and Chloe Blaylock #23 displayed great helping defense and were fearless in vocally leading the team’s communication. With the Wolfpack in the lead we decided on a time out, during which Julia Jackson #4 inspired her team to get aggressive and push beyond the frustration and apply mental toughness on the field. This sparked two goals each from McManus #1 and Moore #14 before the final buzzer. The Lady Phoenix may have been defeated in that particular battle 16 to 11, but they learned a lesson on the importance of persistence, hard work, and being a unified team. Wish them luck in their game against Phillips Exeter Academy this Wednesday, April 24th. LET’S GO GLAX!
