After beginning the season with losses to Williams and Rocky Hill, Hyde Tennis traveled to St. Andrews in search for their first team victory of the season. Hyde went in with their usual top three in their ladder: Matt Marshall, Scott Leonard, and Johnny Schaer. Marshall had his best match of the season at first singles with many games that went into deuce. Sadly, the majority of the games went the other way, ending in a 3-8 loss for Marshall. Leonard and Schaer were both unable to defeat their opponents and ended with match scores of 1-8.
A newcomer to singles, Leo Cao, had an impressive run given his lack of experience. Although he lost, he was able to fight to win three games against his St. Andrews opponent. The first and third doubles teams had great performances that day. Tony Shao and Kevin Ge lost a match that nearly went into a tiebreaker, as they lost 7-9. Nicky Gomez and Virginia Garrity brought their match into a tiebreaker but the match did not end in their favor. At second doubles, Liam Gorey and Joe Ma lost 2-8, which was not their best match.
Hyde’s match at St. Andrews was the first sign of the team really coming together. Each player is beginning to get settled in their position and developing his/her game. This will be an exciting team to watch in the upcoming matches.
