Hyde School’s track and field team opened the 2013 outdoor season with strong performances from both the boys and girls teams when they travelled to Wilbraham and Monson to compete against the home team and Marianapolis Preparatory School this past Saturday. The boys team were the overall champion, outscoring the second place team by nearly forty points. Strong performances in the running events, coupled with a sweep of the shot put helped secure the tri-meet win.
The quartet of Kenneth Grant ’14, Tim Patterson ’16, Jesse McKiernan ’15, and Kevin Wang ’16 took the top four spots in the shot put.McKiernan ’15 also finished second in the 1500m, won the 800m, and competed on the winning 4×400 relay in his first track meet ever.
The highlight performance of the meet came from Brian O’Dea ’13 as he bested his own New England record in the pole vault with an impressive 14’0 jump. Narrowly missing 14’6, he is encouraged that his off-season conditioning has paid off.
Other highlight performances from the boys were Jay Watkins ’13 and Jared Larsen ’13 who captured individual wins of their own in the triple jump and 400m respectively.
The girls also competed against Wilbraham and Monson and Marianapolis. Finishing third amongst three teams, the girls showed a tremendous effort throughout the meet. Severely outnumbered, the Lady Wolfpack members made the most of their events. Janicha Diaz ’14 competing in her first track meet ever finished second in the 400m and 300 hurdles. Amelia Lyle ’14 placed second in the javelin and 800m while also winning the girls pole vault.
A strong start to the 2013 season, the Wolfpack are back in action with their first home meet of the season this Saturday, April 13th.
