Bath: Hyde JV Lacrosse drops opener to Phillips Exeter

Team:       Boys Future Varsity Lacrosse

Date:        April 6, 2013

Score:      Hyde:  3         Phillips Exeter Academy: 15

The first half saw the Phoenix field tilted towards their defensive zone as the Big Red of Phillips Exeter put 12 shots on net and scored on 6, four being power play goals. After the first 8 minutes the team settled down and played solid lacrosse, mostly in the defensive mode, however a few sneak attacks into the offensive side of the field yielded 2 shots on net.

GBWG (ground Balls Win Games) is still true as the Big Red scooped up 18 contested Ground Balls to the Phoenix 4 in the opening frames of the game.  This too changed as the game progressed and the Phoenix gained confidence and experience.  Hang Zhao ’15 led the team with 7 ground balls on the day.   Max Kaplan ’15 dented the twine late in the first quarter to close the first period with Exeter on top six – one.  The second period saw goalkeeper Davis Wu ’15 stop 7 of 10 shots on net as the first half closed with Exeter on top 9 – 1

As the second half began, most heads were up as drills, skills and spills from practice clicked in to the game scenario.  David Wu ( 22 saves on the day) continued to stop shots and the Defense of Charles Chen ’15, Sagel Prosser and Darvin Anderson ’14 stiffened allowing only 9 shots on net.   Lawson Lin ’15 netted Hyde’s second goal near the end of the 3rd period on a nice feed from Max Kaplan.  Exeter dented the twine a few more times, but the Hyde FV’ers were gaining ground balls, experience and confidence.  Gunner Whiting ’16 beat the Big Red keeper on a nice come from behind the net goal to close out the scoring.

It was a growth game.  However, one player stood out with his hustle, attention to coaching, initiating {defensive and offensive} actions on the field.  For his heart and hustle Aaron Leffert ’14 was awarded the FV Dirty Ball for the game.
