Bath: Hyde Wrestling at New England Prep Championships

New England Champion Steven Dwight

The Hyde Phoenix travelled to Wallingford, CT on Friday for the 2013 New England Independent Schools Wrestling Association Championships hosted this year by Choate- Rosemary Hall. This tournament brought together the qualified wrestlers of the 66 New England Prep Wrestling Schools to find out who the New England Champions would be.  The top 7 placers in each weight class in this tournament also advance to next weekend’s Nationals event in Pennsylvania.<

Only two Hyde Phoenix made the trip, an unfortunate circumstance of having the Class A League Championships cancelled due to the weather a week ago.  Senior 285 Steven Dwight and junior 138 Darvin Anderson had made the commitment to greatness and put in the hard work all season, were ready to earn their place on the podium.

At 138 pounds, Junior Captain Darvin Andersonwas dominant in his first match, securing the pin in just 1:48.  On Saturday morning, he battled back from a late deficit with a reversal and back points late in the match to win 9-6 over a tough opponent from Loomis Chaffee in CT.  In the semifinals, Darvin squared off against a tough Belmont Hill wrestler in a back and forth contest.  Unfortunately, Darvin was forced to injury default out of the match.  He struggled to regain his composure in the consolation semifinals against a determined opponent from Brooks School, and had to settle for a 14 – 12 loss in that match.  This set up the 5th place bout, and Darvin would not be denied.  He found his composure and simply dominated from every situation en route to a decisive 12 – 1 victory and a 5th Place Finish!

Senior Captain Steven Dwight entered the tournament as the man to beat in the heavyweight division.  He has been dominant in New England, posting a 19 – 0 record headed into the tournament.  Steven is one of the most coachable, focused, and hardworking wrestlers ever to wear the blue and gold, and he would not be denied!   In his opening bout, Steven racked up a 9-1 margin of victory before locking up the pin at the 1:01 mark.  That’s 9 points in 59 seconds in the New England quarterfinals.  The semifinals featured a rematch of the Battle By the Bay at Tabor Academy final between Steven and Dintino of Coate.  Steven put on a takedown clinic in this match!  He stormed to the 11 – 6 victory on the strength of 4 takedowns and a reversal and his opponent’s 6 points were all as a result of escapes Steven gave him.  In the New England finals, Steven faced Trinity-Pawling School’s #2 ranked heavyweight for the title.  Steven was simply amazing!  He quickly took his opponent down to the mat, dropped him when he attempted to escape, and locked up the pin… and a mere :16 had elapsed.  16 Seconds.  New England Finals.  Steven Dwight Champion!

The efforts of these two gentlemen propelled Hyde to finish 23rd of the 46 teams with qualified wrestlers behind tournament champion Northfield – Mount Hermon of MA.  Both Steven and Darvin have qualified for the National Prep Wrestling Championships at Lehigh University which get underway at 9am on Friday 22 February 2013.  Wish them luck!
