Tough Overtime Loss for Boys JV Basketball vs. Tabor, 57-53

On Saturday, February 16th, the Boys JV Basketball team travelled east to Marion, MA to compete against Tabor Academy.  Strong defense from both teams to start the game kept first half scoring low.  Hyde jumped out to an 11-4 lead before Tabor then went on an 11-0 run to lead by 4.  Implementing a full court press, the Wolf Pack created a number of turnovers, which fueled an offensive burst before the half.  The Wolf Pack regained the lead in the final minute of first half, 20-19, but Tabor tied the score by converting 1 of 2 free throws with seconds remaining.

Hyde came out strong in the second half, jumping out in front, and holding onto a lead until a last-second 3 point shot by Tabor tied the game at 50 and sent the contest into overtime.  The first half had seen the Wolf Pack’s scoring shared evenly by eight different players, including a key 3-pointer by junior Johnny Schaer.  In the second half, tenacious defensive play by Kenny Zhang ’14, Joey Fan ’13, and Jake Hedrick ’14 led to offensive production by juniors John Nelson and Jason Zhao.  Nelson and Zhao finished with 10 and 13 points respectively.  With 8 seconds remaining in the second half, and Hyde leading 50-47, Tabor rolled the ball inbounds and were forced to frantically pass it around until a last-gasp three-point attempt from the top of the arc fell through with 0.7 seconds remaining.

Stunned, the Wolf Pack were unprepared for the composure necessary to regain the momentum in overtime.  After several open looks by Zhao and Sam Valentine ’13 clanged in and out of the rim, the Wolf Pack fell to Tabor 57-53 in overtime.
