The Hyde Boys JV Basketball team faced off against a talented Wheeler team on Saturday, losing 44-38 in one of the most exciting games of the year. With a number of key players still absent from the team due to illness and injury, all nine active players contributed in a significant way. Co-captains John Nelson ’14 and Sam Valentine ’13 played their best games of the year, defending well, and scoring 12 and 14 points, respectively. After jumping out to an early 8 point lead, the Wolfpack then found themselves down 8 at the half. In the second half, Hyde came out with a full-court press led by aggressive play from Joey Fan ’13, Kevin Ding ’13, and Kenny Zhang ’14. This led to plenty of forced turnovers, but the Wolfpack were too-often unable to convert on these fast break opportunities. Down by 10 points with 4 minutes to go, Hyde showed a determination and resilience it has not shown enough of this year. Boosted by Valentine’s vocal encouragement, the boys kept pressing until the final whistle. Though it was tough to swallow a second loss in two days, the Wolfpack walked away from this contest with their heads held high, and looking forward to a rematch at home in February.
