The Hyde School Phoenix Varsity Wrestlers concluded the dual meet portion of the 2012 – 2013 season in a quad meet at Worcester Academy yesterday. The Phoenix squared off against Lexington Christian Academy, Avon Old Farms School, and the host Hilltoppers. The Phoenix went 1-2 on the day.
In the opening match against Lexington Christian Academy, senior 160 Sagel Prosser started us off with a bang, earning his first varsity win this season in a thrilling 9- 6 decision! Junior Jack Howarth followed suit with a great performance and a win by pin at 195. Junior 138 Darvin Anderson, ranked 5th in New England bested his 7th ranked opponent by the score of 8-2, though we fell to LCA by the final score of 48 – 30.
Against Worcester Academy, the dual meet score hung in the balance as each team traded leads. Senior Captain Austin Wang wrestled an outstanding match at 120 pounds and earned a gritty 10 – 6 victory. 138 pounder Darvin Anderson needed just 29 seconds to secure a victory by pin, before the match came down to junior 152 Elliott Wang. Elliott wrestled a stupendous match against an equal opponent, securing an early takedown and controlling the first period. The match became a back and forth affair with each wrestler securing the lead and ended in a mad scramble at the buzzer. Elliott emerged victorious with his first varsity win by the narrowest of margins, 6-5. Congratulations! The dual meet score was tied at the conclusion of the dual meet, and the Phoenix earned the tiebreak victory by virtue of more total wins in the matches, 37 – 36.
We saved our best wrestling of the day for our final match against Avon Old Farms School of CT. After receiving two forfeits earlier, Senior Captain Steven Dwight earned at dominant win at heavyweight while senior 220 Will Davis and junior 195 Jack Howarth followed suit with wins of their own. Sophomore 126 Hang Zhao turned rock solid takedown defense into a 5 point counter and pinfall victory in his match. Senior 160 Sagel Prosser showed much toughness and determination in his final contest of the day battling back from a considerable deficit before losing by disqualification (for too many technical violations). We were unable to overcome the deficit of forfeits, and fell to Avon 48 – 36.
The “Men of the Match” were junior 195 Jack Howarth and junior 138 Darvin Anderson. Slick offense, powerful defense, and the drive to make themselves and their team better personify these gentlemen, who in addition to this honor, have been named 2013 – 2014 Team Captains.
The Phoenix travel to Hyde – CT for the 2013 Northern New England Invitational on Saturday 2 February to complete our 2012 – 2013 regular season where we look to improve and be very competitive in the 15 team competition.
