Dear Hyde Community et al,

We are about to experience some important transitions at Hyde. After nearly 30 years at Hyde, Don MacMillan has decided to step aside as Head of School at Hyde-Bath. The information and personal messages below are offered to shed light on some of the changes about to occur at Bath and Woodstock.

If you have been at Hyde for any length of time, you know of Don’s contributions to all of us since he began here three decades ago fresh out of Bowdoin College. He has been an exemplary math teacher and athletic coach (e.g., twice named Maine’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year by his peers). He set the standard of what it means to be a Dean of Students at Hyde. After serving as Assistant Head, he was the founding head of Hyde’s very first public charter school and has now served as Head of School in Bath for the past five years. Suffice it to say that Don’s contributions dwarf a letter like this. On behalf of everyone at Hyde, I offer deepest appreciation to Don and Gigi MacMillan for all of their efforts and contributions to kids, faculty, and families at Hyde.

In recent years our senior administrative team has worked closely with the Board of Governors to develop a plan for effective succession at Hyde. As a result, Laura Gauld will be moving from Woodstock to Bath where she will continue her role as Executive Director of Hyde’s Boarding Schools and will act as Head of School at Bath. Replacing Laura as Head of School at Woodstock will be Bob Felt. You will learn details of these transitions in the coming months.

Effective succession is critical to a healthy Hyde. It is also never easy. One of the unique advantages of having two campuses is our ability to offer more opportunities for professional development. This transition will provide new opportunities for our people as we honor our commitment to “One School – Two Campuses.”

I know you will join me in wishing Don and Gigi the very best with their future plans. (We will also look forward to seeing them from time to time on campus next year during their son Wilson’s senior year.) I also know you will support Laura, Bob, and their teams in this transition. All of us invite your ideas and suggestions as we work together to ensure that Hyde’s best days lie ahead.

Onward,
