Senior Austin Wang locks up the pin against Deerfield

The Hyde Phoenix Varsity Wrestling team returned to the mat this weekend in a Class A League quad meet at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA.  The Phoenix lost all three of their dual meet competitions on the day.  Congratulations to the Wolfpack of Hyde – CT for avenging their loss in the Hyde v. Hyde Winter Classic in December with a 36 – 30 victory on Saturday.

Though missing 4 starting wrestlers due to injury and illness, several Phoenix put together exciting performances.  Junior 152 Andrew Martz finished the day 2-1, losing a close decision to his Deerfield opponent.  Senior Captain Steven Dwight was simply unstoppable in collecting 3 big wins,  and junior 170 Charles Chen, though he didn’t secure a victory on Saturday went into each match with fierce determination and led the team with his inspiring effort.

The “Man of the Match” was without doubt senior Captain 120 Austin Wang, who finished the day at 3-0 and who battled back from deficits to victory in each of his matches.  He personified courage and character, and earned each of his wins with determination and hard work.  Congratulations!

The Phoenix look to regroup and get healthy before heading to The NMH Duals at Northfield – Mount Hermon School on Saturday 19 January.  Hyde will be competing against some of the toughest teams in the nation, starting with 3rd ranked Wyoming Seminary of Pennsylvania at 8am.

Wish us luck!
