On Saturday, January 5th the Hyde-Woodstock varsity wrestlers traveled to Loomis-Chaffee School to compete in a tri-meet against Tabor and the host school. Both teams have been long time powerhouses in the Class A’s, so we prepared for a tough day of wrestling after returning from our well-deserved break. One thing to note was that the conditioning of the team was lacking, yet the effort was definitely present for the day. We are also still struggling to fill all the weight classes and had to forfeit the 106-126-152-220lb weight classes, giving up 24 points each match.
Tabor Academy: 63
We began the tri-meet against Tabor Academy. This team has been building in strength for the past few years and represented a real obstacle to our wrestlers. We had seen them in action at the Battle on the Bay tournament which some of the wrestlers attended on December 15th, so we knew they were solid all around. They successfully pinned many of our newer wrestlers who put up a valiant fight, but fell to good technique and mechanics. Even our team captain, Marcos Mercado ’14 was bested when facing last year’s New England champion John Anderson. The match, although a defeat, was an excellent gauge of how far Mercado has come. In the first period, he gave up a take down and went into the second period at 0-2. His opponent chose down in the second, and Mercado dominated him on top for the entire two minute period. Unfortunately, he was hit with a locking hands call and the score was at 0-3. In the third, Mercado took bottom and hit a beautiful reversal bringing the score to 2-3, but then had another locking hands call. Score set at 2-4, Marcos made the choice to let his opponent up and go for a takedown. He got the takedown bringing the score to 4-5, and after letting him up again, he tried repeatedly to earn another take down but could not get one. The match ended with a 4-6 decision, but I look forward to seeing these two battle it out in Class A’s and New England’s. Also of note were great pins made by Holt Brown ’14 and Colin Studwell ’14. These two earned the only wins in this match up and have shown tremendous growth as wrestlers.
Loomis-Chaffee School: 54
Our second match was against the host school. Loomis has always had a solid program but our team exposed some weaknesses in their lineup this year. Team captain, Marcos Mercado ’14 avenged his previous defeat with a second period pin against his opponent in the 132lb weight class. Brian O’Dea ’13 impressed us all with a powerful double arm bar finish and Colin Studwell ’14 earned his second win of the day with a fast pin. A major highlight was Doug Main ’15 who earned his second varsity win of the season in a tough fought match against his opponent in the 195lb weight class. By the end of the meet, we felt great about how we did against both teams even though it was a loss. We know that in the coming weeks, we need to get our conditioning back to where it needs to be as well as work further on technique. A special shout out goes to Jonathan White ’14 who entered his first varsity competition and showed poise and a great fighting spirit. He almost pinned his Loomis opponent and with time he will put some points on the board for Hyde.
Our next match is on Wednesday, January 6 against Choate Rosemary Hall. Come by and support our team since this is a battle on our home mats. See you there and thanks for your support.
