Hyde’s Indoor Track program competed in its first meet of the season on Friday, January 4th at the University of Southern Maine. The Hyde Indoor Track program is a member of the Western Maine Conference Indoor Track League (a public school conference). Full meet results are attached in addition to a couple of video clips (you’ll have to flip your computer screen/iPad)..
Our anxious group of 20 athletes walked in the field house at USM and witnessed 400 other high school track athletes warming up and preparing for the evening’s competition from seven other competitive Maine high schools. For all but five of our athletes, this was their first-ever indoor track meet and I could see they were nervous and a little intimidated.
I was pleased with our performance considering our students had just returned from break and hadn’t had one practice under their belt. In terms of team scoring, both the men’s and women’s teams placed 8th out of the eight teams participating. If our 5th year seniors were eligible to score (they aren’t because of league rules), our men would have picked up an additional 22 points to come in 5th place overall.
Our men’s 4 x 800m relay team (Cody Mitchell `13, Griffin Palola-Harriman `14, Alexi Philippoussis `15, and Zach Leighninger `12) started things off with a bag by winning the event with a time of 9:19.64… over 20 seconds faster than last year. That relay helped inspired the team and inspired a very solid evening of individual performances. Also earning scoring honors in this huge meet were Julia Jackson `14 in the 400m dash (5th place… 1:08.98); Mady Preece `13 in the 400m dash (6th place… 1:09.46); Alexi Philippoussis `15… 5th in the Junior Division boys 400m, 3rd in the Junior Division shot put and 6th in the men’s pole vault; Andrew Davis `15… 4th in the Junior Division 400m and 2nd in the Junior Division 200m. Standout 5th year/non-scoring performances were put in by Joel Harris `13… first in the men’s high jump (6’ 2”) and 3rd place in the men’s 200m, and Ethan Morrow `13… 5th place in the men’s high jump.
Other highlights included…
Heaven Redd `16 – 20th out of 36 in the Junior Division 200m (33.31)
Avery Booth `15 – 19th out of 27 in the mile (7:07.16)
Max Zerrudo-Turgeon `15 – 8th out of 16 in the Junior Division 55m hurdles (10.79) and 17th out of 42 in the Junior Division 200m (27.72).
Cody Mitchell `13 – 18th out of 38 in the mile (5:19.83)
It was a very exciting and inspiring evening of track and field for Hyde. Our next meet is Wednesday at Phillips Andover (Andover, MA… 3:30PM), followed by another Friday meet at USM at 6:30PM).
