The Hyde Phoenix Varsity Wrestling team travelled to Tabor Academy in Marion, MA for the first annual Battle by the Bay Tournament. This topnotch tournament featured a day of tough and exciting wrestling with 26 private and public schools participating. Though we travelled with only 8 wrestlers, Coaches Kidwell and Sataloff were unbelievably proud of the individual effort from the team. The hard work paid off in an impressive 9th place team finish overall (trailing 8th place Loomis Chaffee, CT by 2 ) behind tournament champions Belmont Hill, MA.
The Phoenix wrestled tough and have much to celebrate heading into the holiday break! Individual results are below:
106 Sam Williams 2-2 on the day, finishing just one match shy of placing. Sam continues to improve every time he wrestles and proved this weekend that he can win the close ones with a dramatic 2-0 second round win.
120 Austin Wang 0-2 on the day, battling illness and fatigue but with no lack of courage or focus.
126 Hang Zhao 1-1 on the day. Hang is rapidly improving and is become a wrestler to be reckoned with.
132 Billy Martinez 1-2 on the day. Billy has been struggling, but is putting all of the pieces together. He picked up his first win of the season in a 4-2 battle with his Tabor opponent.
138 Darvin Anderson 3-2 on the day, 4th place! Darvin really wrestled well on Saturday and earned 4th place on the strength of 3 dominating wins against 2 close losses. I think New England Prep Wrestling has taken notice and we are excited for the second half of the season.
160 Moises Diaz 4-1 on the day, 3rd place! Moises simply outworks his competition, and his attitude towards his lone loss in New England this season speaks volumes about his character and is but one piece of his inspirational leadership on this team.
170 Cody Baker 3-2 on the day, 6th place. Cody wrestled up two weight classes in this tournament and came up with clutch wins and proved something important to himself in the process. We are looking forward to a strong return to the mat, and his actual weight class after the break.
285 Steven Dwight 3-0 on the day, CHAMPION. Steven will not be outworked. In his three matches, Steven did not give up a point and needed just 1:56 to secure the championship. That’s 1 minute, 56 seconds… total wrestling time and un-scored upon. Gracious and friendly with all off the mat, he takes no prisoners inside that circle.
The Boys from Bath pushed each other, supported each other, and showed tremendous spirit against a very strong tournament field. We head into the holiday break with much to be proud of and much more to work towards together. The Phoenix return to the mat on 12 January 2013 in a quad meet at Deerfield Academy.
Dreaming Big, Working Hard.
