Hyde Phoenix 40
Kents Hill Huskies 30
The Hyde School Lady Phoenix basketball team treated a raucous home crowd to an impressive 40-30 victory over the Huskies of Kents Hill and improved their season record to 2-0. It was an impressive team victory as the ladies overcame a sluggish start and an early 6 point deficit to take a 2 point lead at the half and didn’t trail the rest of the game. So. Jailene Martinez and Fr. Diamond Brown played outstanding basketball in the paint as they effectively controlled the boards and frustrated Kents Hill’s inside game all night. Brown scored 9 points in addition to her tough defensive play. Once again, the offense was paced by super Sr. Kara Fischer who led all scorers with 14 points and effectively controlled the tempo of the game with her fine ball handling skills. On the wing, Sr. Katie Comeaux and Fr. Chloe Blaylock did a fine job of setting picks for Fischer and did a solid job of passing and playing perimeter defense. Blaylock contributed 6 points to the offensive total as well. After the game, the ladies celebrated with pride and enthusiasm in the locker room as they recognized this victory as one of the biggest in recent history of Hyde School girls basketball. The team has embraced the symbolism of its Phoenix mascot and is intent on resurrecting the girls basketball program and taking it to new heights. Tonight’s victory was a critical step in making that vision come to life, but there is a lot of hard work to be done! Next up, the Lady Phoenix take on visiting Islesboro Tuesday at 5:30 pm here at Hyde. Go Phoenix!
