Bath Swim Meet
Bath YMCA, Maine- Spectators watch Margot King’s close finish in Girls 400 Free Relay

Hyde Phoenix Swim Team Kicks Off Season

The Phoenix swimmers dove into the first meet of the winter season last Friday evening on our home turf at the YMCA in Bath. Scoring 19 points total, Hyde Swimming fell to Waynflete School and Windham High School.

With a mix of veteran and emerging swimmers, our first meet was a formative experience for the entire team. Highlights include impressive times from Margot King ’16 with a time of 2:49 in 200 Individual Medley and 1:11 in 100 Free. Making a comeback during the last leg of 400 Free Relay, King placed the Phoenix in second with a time of 5:30 along with teammates Eve Amato ’14, Tia Bauer-Hummel ’13, and Cris Boeckel ’15. In addition, Connor Champagne ’13 finished second in 100 Fly with a time of 1:18. Other shout-outs go to Leo Wang ’15, Gunnar Whiting ‘16, and Eduardo Gadsden ’13, who had the first meet of their swimming careers.

Despite a long 3-hour meet, there were always supportive teammates cheering at the end of the lane. As Ethan Blatt ’13 puts it, “The morale and team spirit were great. It was awesome to have faculty members take part in the timing. I think we have a decent amount that we can improve on, but am also very proud of our team as a whole.”

In the coming week the team will be working on legal turns, finishes, and kicking as well as endurance. We look forward to working hard and bonding as a team as we head into the season. On Thursday Hyde Swimming will face Thornton, again on home turf at the Y. We invite you to come out and support us.

Go Phoenix!
