Phoenix Tame The Bears. Hyde Boy’s Start Season With Win
Final Score: Hyde 46
AR Gould 38
The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team journeyed to Long Creek in South Portland on Friday December 7th for the opening game of their 2012-2013
season. They faced the Bears of A.R Gould. Early season jitters and nerves were apparent as the Phoenix got off to a slow start.
A.R. Gould had some incidental offense and struggled against the Phoenix defense. However the Bears managed to lead after the first quarter 11-10.
Evander Lenardson ‘14 erupted in the 2nd quarter with 3 field goals to lead the Phoenix to a 22-20 half-time lead.
“Long Creek is a difficult court to play on. The place is loud.” said junior guard Wilson MacMillan.
Hyde struggled from the free throw line and completed only 6 out of 13 attempts.
The game was marred by turnovers by both teams. However, the pace was action filled and fast.
The Phoenix went on a 10 -0 run in the 3rd quarter behind the full court defensive pressure led by Talin Rowe ’14 and Kiefer Cundy ’15. Mustapha Niang ‘14 made 3 key steals to help the Phoenix take a commanding lead. Hyde led by as many as 14 in the 4th quarter.
“I thought we only played two minutes of real basketball tonight. We got some real defense in the third. I had been waiting for us to settle down.” said head coach Peter E. Rowe.
Junior guard Wilson MacMillan contributed 9 points. Evander Lenardson finished with 8 points. Ryan Cassidy ‘13 finished with 7 points and 7 rebounds and some heady interior play.
Phoenix Run Away From the Breakers Early: Defeat Pine Tree Academy 55-28
Hyde playing a second consecutive road game on back to back nights, picked up the pace on Saturday against Pine Tree Academy in Freeport. They emerged with a 52-28 win and moved to 2-0 on the season.
The Phoenix seemed more composed on offense and had multiple athletes scoring as they shared the ball. Hyde led 23-8 after the first quarter. They went on a 12-0 run midway through the first quarter behind the full court pressure.
“Talin (Rowe ’14), Wilson (MacMillan ’14) and Kiefer (Cundy ’15) all did a great job in applying the pressure on the defensive end. They set the tone for the game.” said assistant coach Jordan Wilkins.
Ryan Cassidy ’13 dominated the paint with 14 points, all from solid post play. He was helped on offense by Evander Lenardson ’14 who finished with 9. Talin Rowe ’14 had 6 points and 6 offensive rebounds. Ben Burlock ‘13 led all rebounders with 10.
“It’s early and most of our players are still learning their roles. I was encouraged by some of the improvements.” added Head Coach Peter E. Rowe.
“I liked our defensive energy. And I thought we were able to show greater patience on our offense.”
The Phoenix are back in action on Tuesday when they host Isleboro in Bath.
