Bath: Lady Phoenix Basketball Debuts at Aliegh Mills Tourney

The Hyde Girls Basketball season kicked off this past weekend with the team’s participation in the Aliegh Mills Tournament hosted by Kents Hill School.  Despite having only a few practices under their belt, the Lady Phoenix represented themselves well overall and certainly had a great deal of fun traveling and playing together.  On Friday evening, the Phoenix fell 49-30 to a strong team from their sister school Hyde Woodstock led by two very strong players, Cashmir Fulcher and Jancina Diaz who combined for 44 of the teams 49 points.  Despite the loss, the Lady Phoenix fought hard and never gave up as evidenced by a strong 4th quarter in which they out-scored their opponents 15-8 led by Shannon Ward who scored 6 of her team high 9 points in the final frame.  Kara Fischer and Katie Comeaux worked hard to break the Wolfpack backcourt pressure, while freshmen Diamond Brown and Chloe Blaylock worked to exploit the opponents in the paint combining for 10 points.

On Saturday, the Lady Phoenix came out firing on all cylinders vs. Hebron Academy as they raced out to a 12-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back en route to a convincing 40-15 victory over the Lady Lumberjacks.  Kara Fischer led all scorers with 11 points, all of which came in the first half while Katie Comeaux contributed 10 points of her own.  Sophomore Jailene Martinez made her presence felt in the paint with solid defense, good rebounding, and 6 points.  Allie Helfrich, Susanna McManus, and Emma Leonard each scored their first baskets of the young season and made valuable contributions on the defensive side of the ball.  Perhaps our team’s most valuable player in this tournament was our player-manager Carolyn Moore who did a fantastic job as the official team score keeper and our number one cheerleader.

Overall, the coaches were very pleased with the team’s performance in this tournament and there is a great deal of enthusiasm and optimism as the team heads into the season.  This is a group of girls who enjoy working hard and appear committed to making the most of the 2012-13 season.  Next up for the Lady Phoenix is a road trip this Saturday to take on Pine Tree Academy where they look to notch a victory before settling in to cheer on the Hyde boys team who also faces Pine Tree.   Additionally, the girls team would like to invite you to come out and support them in their home opener vs. Kents Hill on Monday, December 10th.

Go Phoenix!
