4 December 2012

It was a big opening weekend for Hyde Wrestling. The Boys from Bath travelled down to Newark, NJ to compete in the Michael and Sandye Caruso Invitational tournament at St. Benedict’s Prep.  This tournament brought together prominent prep schools, including the nationally #2 ranked Wyoming Seminary of Pennsylvania as well as the Virginia state 2nd place Robinson High School to compete in a field of 12 on the first weekend of the 2012 – 2013 wrestling season.

The level of competition was indeed stout, but the Phoenix were up to the test and wrestled competitively in every contested match.  Standouts on the day included junior 145 Darvin Anderson who earned a gritty win in overtime as well as Senior Captain Moises Diaz (160), who earned 4th place in this competitive tournament, earning wins over wrestlers from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania in the process.  Other Phoenix wrestlers who competed in the tournament included senior 106 Sam Williams, senior Captain 132 Billy Martinez, senior 152 Cody Baker,  junior 195 Jack Howarth, and sophomore heavyweight Austin Makris.

The “Man of the Match” for Hyde was easily Senior Captain Steven Dwight (285).  Steven wrestled his way to the finals in dominating fashion before losing to Wyoming Seminary’s #6 ranked heavyweight to earn 2nd place.  For his awesome display of power, poise, and technique, Steven is Hyde School’s Athlete of the Week.

As we head into our dual meet season, which begins at home on Wednesday at 6:30 in a friendly exhibition with Morse High School in the Battle of Bath, we have learned that even little mistakes will cost us and that we can wrestle with anyone.  The Phoenix are poised for a great season characterized by toughness, hard work, and sportsmanship.  Our first regular season dual meets will happen on Friday at Roxbury Latin, with a 4:30 scheduled start time.

Dreaming big, Working hard,
