Wolf Pack Varsity Football Takes on St. Luke’s in End-of-Season Heartbreaker

In a game held at Kingswood-Oxford School (W. Hartford), the Hyde Wolfpack football team squared off against St. Luke’s School (New Canaan) for the New England Prep School Championship in the small schools division. Befitting two 7 & 1 teams, the game was a nail-biter with St. Luke’s pulling out a 28-26 victory.

St. Luke’s came at Hyde with a double-dose of Noel Thomas: head coach Noel Sr. and his UConn-bound son, Noel, Jr. who piled up 163 yards rushing on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns.

The last minute of play was the most dramatic with Hyde coming into possession of the ball on its own 40-yard line with no time-outs at its disposal and 53 seconds remaining in the contest. At that point, seniors Dan Palmer and Tyquan Ekejiuba got down to business as passer and receiver, respectively. After a series of sideline passes between the two advanced Hyde into the red zone, the two connected for a touchdown with less than 1 second remaining on the clock. While all that remained between Hyde and an overtime opportunity for victory was the 2-point conversion, the St. Luke’s defense buckled down, stopping senior Jay Watkins just inches from the end zone and St. Luke’s emerged the winner.
