Bath, ME—In the second overtime against MacDuffie School, Hyde junior Wilson MacMillan, with an assist by team captain Ethan Morrow ’13, shoots in a goal, clinching their NEPSAC victory, a first in Hyde School’s 46 year history. The final score was 2-1.
It was a beautiful day for soccer at the Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, host of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class D Soccer Championships. The Hyde Phoenix jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Wondo Shaw ’13 buried a Kiefer Cundy ’14 corner kick just ten minutes into the match. The score remained this way until a MacDuffie player went down in the box and a penalty was awarded with only 20 minutes to play in regulation. Billy Martinez ’13 made the initial save but the rebound was gobbled up and put away to even the score line. The game went into overtime with Hyde holding the run of play. In the first overtime Hyde dominated the chances but couldn’t find the net. In the second overtime a streaking Morrow laid the ball to a wide open MacMillan who converted the golden goal opportunity.
This is the first NEPSAC championship in soccer for the Hyde School in their history. Both coaches are thrilled with the heart and effort that was displayed by their charges throughout the season. This team was built on character first, and they showed that yesterday in the final. Coach Randy Smith shared “The boys had what will be a very memorable season. They faced many challenges on their run to the title. In the end, it was their commitment to playing as a team that created the synergy and strength of character, which allowed them to fulfill their championship potential. They are a special bunch, and Coach Plourde and I are very proud of their collective grit, tenacity, and sportsmanship this fall. They represented themselves and our school with class. It was a fitting end to a wonderful season.”
