The Wolf Pack Outruns the Phoenix
When Hyde Bath versus Hyde Woodstock; you know “Hyde” is going to win! The Phoenix hosted the Woodstock Wolf Pack for the final game of the season. Woodstock was playing for a 7 and 1 record and a possible bid to post season play and the Phoenix playing for a winning 5 – 3 season. On the opening play, Hyde fumbled and the Pack recovered. Eight plays and 68 yards later, #2 Daniel Palmer punched it in from the 1 yard line and #3 Jay Watkins added the 2 points to put the Pack on top with 5:45 to go in the first quarter. The Pack would never look back. Two Hyde plays later another fumble, another Pack recovery and another Watkins score. After 12 minutes of play, Hyde had only 6 snaps from center and the Pack on top 20 to 0.
Hyde Sophomore Austin Makris came up with a big stop on Watkins to stop a Pack drive and the Hyde offense finally came alive as Steven Dwight ’13 rambled 47 yards in 3 plays with Hyde almost in the red zone with a first and 10 from the 28 yard line. Once again slippery pigskin thwarted the Phoenix. On the very next play, Pack-Back Watkins sprinted off tackle 54 yards for his second TD of the day putting the pack up further 20 – 0. The Phoenix came right back on a 42 yard Evander Lenardson ’14 completion to senior tight end Ben Burlock. Phoenix Captain Terry Norris then bolted 9 yards to put Bath on the board with 6:30 to go in the half. Phoenix defenders Jack Howarth ’14 and Steven Dwight came up with huge stuffs with Terry Norris intercepting a Palmer pass and with 4:02 the Phoenix appeared to be rising. However, the offense sputtered, forcing a punt from deep in their own territory. The Pack was back on the Hyde 35, three plays later Watkins again scored on a 21 yard run up the middle. The Phoenix put together a nice drive behind two more Burlock (5 catches and 87 yards on the day) catches, but ran out of time on the Pack 24 yard line to go into halftime still in the hunt, but down 6 – 28.
With 20 seconds gone in the third, Watkins sauntered 67 yards on the Packs first play from scrimmage for his 4th score. Hyde put together an offensive drive that sputtered on the Pack 45. Two Pack plays later, QB Daniel Palmer racked up his second score on a 67 yard run. With 5:50 to go in the third, the Pack was in control and leading 42 – 6. One minute and three seconds later Phoenix Captain Terry Norris answered with his own 65 yard dash through the Pack defense and closed the gap to 42 – 12. A minute later Pack QB Palmer sprinted 23 yards for the third TD in 5 plays from scrimmage! Pack now up 48 to 12 with 12 minutes to go…in the season.
Dwight and Norris opened the 4th with a two man – two play 49 yard TD drive with Norris punching his way 31 yards for the score at the 11:13 mark; Pack: 48 – Hyde: 20. Three minutes later Watkins answered with his own 36 yards score; Pack: 55 – Hyde: 20. Senior Phoenix Captain Troy Jones closed the scoring with a 41 yard drive and his first TD on the day and the two point conversion;
Hyde Wolf Pack: 55 – Hyde Phoenix: 28.
The Phoenix wishes to thank all their fans for their incredible support as we traveled all over New England.
We wish the Pack the best of luck (and attitude) as they bid for post season play next week.
