MAISAD Final, double overtime

Hyde – 1

Gould Academy – 2

After upsetting Hebron Academy in the semi-final, Hyde hosted Gould Academy who had knocked off the number one seed Kents Hill.  The fact that Hyde had beaten them in two previous matches, both by narrow margin, was no longer relevant as the Gould team had obviously found its legs late in the season as the Phoenix had.  It proved to be an incredibly close match.

The first half went scoreless as both teams were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities.  The play was primarily dominated by the visiting Huskies with a few intermittent chances for Hyde.  Senior goal keeper Katie Comeaux ’13 played an outstanding half saving several key shots including a direct kick deflected just over the crossbar.  Marking backs Allie Helfrich ’15 and Hope Stinson ’14 did a great job shutting down Gould’s speedy strikers, backed by veteran sweeper Mady Preece ’13.  Unfortunately, the Phoenix couldn’t seem to generate on offense and had trouble settling the ball in the midfield.

After the break, the Hyde team returned to the field with more confidence and determination.  They began to communicate more and generate scoring opportunities.  The first goal of the match came as Kara Fischer ’13 took a quick kick opportunity striking the crossbar to the head of striker Shannon Ward ’14.  With twenty eight minutes left to play, Gould had plenty of time to hunt for the equalizer.  Despite a strong defensive effort, they found it when a Gould striker got loose on a through ball, tying the game at one apiece.  Both teams fought hard to the closing whistle but were unable to score, sending the match into overtime.

The first three five minute overtimes went scoreless and just as it looked like Hyde would get another chance at penalty kicks, Gould found the back of the net with only seconds left to play in the sudden victory period.  It was a difficult loss but a match well fought and an exciting end to a comeback season.
