Hyde – 7

CVA – 1

Driving along the Carrabassett River on route 27 was like entering a tunnel of orange, red and yellow.  It was a perfect fall day; clear, bright, mid-60s.  The Phoenix were excited to face CVA for the first time this season and came ready to play.  They charged off the first whistle and opened the scoring just 4:00 minutes into the match.  Senior captain Kara Fischer ’13 scored the first goal on an outside shot reminiscent of her two against Gould earlier in the season; a well-placed chip over the keeper’s head.  Hyde controlled the game at midfield and continued to press CVA.  The second goal came when striker Olivia Griffing ’14 carried the ball twenty yards from wide right to the corner of the box shooting the ball into the upper corner of the goal.  Three more Phoenix goals were scored before the half on shots fired from the eighteen, Carolyn Moore ’14, Kara Fischer ’13 and Julia Jackson ’14 in that order.  Perhaps most impressive was the composure with which the team played as they denied CVA the ball.  The first half closed with Hyde up 5-0.

As with many games, it was an entirely different second half.  CVA returned with fierce intensity assisted by a very boisterous home crowd.  They flooded the attack and succeeded in knocking the Phoenix off their game. Despite an early second period goal from Kara Fischer ’13 on a beautiful cross from Shannon Ward ’14, the game’s momentum had clearly swung in the CVA direction.  After a near miss on a corner kick and a shot that hit the post, they finally scored midway through the half.  The Phoenix finally began to rally and reclaim the game but were unable to find the composure they exhibited during the first half.  They scored one more goal with a minute left to play on an indirect kick.  The set play was a perfect execution with Carolyn Moore ’14 playing the ball to Kara Fischer ‘13 who struck it for the goal.  The team faces Gould on Saturday.
