GIRLS’ VARSITY SOCCER
October 13, 2011
Hyde Bath – 5
Hyde Woodstock – 0
In front of a Family Weekend crowd, the Phoenix rose from a bitter defeat at Kents Hill the Wednesday prior and never allowed their opponent in to the game. Playing with intensity from the opening whistle, the team controlled the mid-field and mounted a steady stream of attacks on goal. The first goal came in under five minutes when stopper Carolyn Moore ’14 netted a beautifully struck corner kick. Woodstock began to battle back and held the Phoenix until 22:47 when Bath found its second goal on a breakaway by Shannon Ward ’14. From there the Phoenix went on to score two more goals; Carolyn Moore ’14 on a direct kick and mid-fielder Jenny Morin ’14 struck a volley off a great cross from Olivia Griffing ’14. With a 4-0 lead the Bath team took the half with confidence and enthusiasm.
Though mostly scoreless, the second half was again controlled by the Bath team. Kara Fisher ’13 and Julia Jackson ’14 worked hard in the mid-field sending through balls and peppering the net from the outside. The only goal of the half came on a breakaway from Olivia Griffing ’14 as she snuck the ball behind the keeper on a left footed shot. It was a well spirited game with great sportsmanship on both teams. The Phoenix were flying as they finally put together 80 full minutes of great soccer.
