Bath: Hyde football improves to 3-0 at home Saturday

Hyde Phoenix Football Team Impress in Home Opener

After spending the first two weeks notching road victories, the Hyde Phoenix football team debuted in the friendly confines of Phoenix Field where they rewarded their enthusiastic fans with a 33-22 victory over the Vermont Academy Wildcats.  The Phoenix used a power running game and a tough physical defense to race to a 26 – 0 halftime lead from which they never looked back on their way to improving their season record to 3-0.  Sr. RB’s Steven Dwight and Terry Norris paced a running game that totaled 359 yards on 31 carries.  Norris rushed for 138 yards on 9 carries and 2 TD’s while Dwight tallied 143 yards on 8 carries and 2 TD’s of his own.  Jr. Omar Harris ran for 40 yards on 7 carries while Sr. Peter Lin chipped in 28 yards on 4 carries and turned in one of the most unexpected and exciting plays of the day when he fielded an onside kick and returned it 50 yards for a TD.  Once again, Jr. QB Evander Lenardson did a fine job of controlling the tempo of the Phoenix offense, while Sr’s Cody Baker and Troy Jones deliver key downfield blocking that helped to spring several long runs.

The team takes great pride in its ability to win the physical and mental aspects of the game.  The team knows that to do that, they must dominate the line of scrimmage.  Steady front line offensive and defensive contributions by the likes of Fr. Noah Willert, So’s Aaron Leffert, Austin Makris, and Zack Messina, Jr’s Jack Howarth and Zack Mann, and Sr’s Ryan Cassidy and Ben Burlock continue to key Hyde’s success.  Even the Vermont Academy head coach, Mike Atkins complimented the Hyde front line when he credited them with outplaying his front line players who he acknowledged as being much bigger than the Hyde players.

The Hyde School football team would like to graciously thank all of the fans who came out in support of the team today.  There is no doubt that your enthusiasm and your strong sense of “Hyde Pride” inspires the entire team.  A special “thank you” to the wonderfully supportive parents of the team for consistently traveling whatever distances to support the team with love, cheer, and some fantastic eats afterwards!  J

Next Game:  Saturday, Oct. 13th – Home vs. Portsmouth Abby 3 pm.
