Bath: Sports Review: Cross Country

On Saturday September 8th, the Hyde Phoenix travelled to Brunswick to support the local police force in their benefit race: the Hot Pursuit 5k.
The defending MAISAD cross country champions began their season with a strong showing.  Hyde placed 6 runners in the top 15 spots and placed 7 in the top 20 finishers.

The race had over 200 entries.  Isaac Preston ’12 led Hyde, finishing 5th overall with a time of 18:06.  Cody Mitchell ’12 finished 7th overall.

Pack running has become a mainstay of the Phoenix; Austin Wang ’12, Isaiah Mokeme ’13, and Talin Rowe ’13 and Griffin Palola ’13 finished within 10 seconds of one another and rounded out the top 15 runners in the race.  Preston, Mitchell and Palola were age group winners in the charity event.

The following week the cross country team journeyed to Bar Harbor in the early hours of the morning. They participated in the (MDI) Mt. Desert Island 5k on Saturday September 15th.  The course was extremely challenging as the first half of the rugged terrain was entirely uphill. Isaac Preston ‘12 again led the charge finishing 7th overall. He finished first in the 14-19 age .  Captain Cody Mitchell ‘12 finished 10th overall. Hyde placed 8 runners in the top 20 places in the field which had 150 runners.  Wang ’12, Mokeme ’13 and Rowe ’13 rounded out Hyde’s top five.  Sam Williams ‘12 and Richard Liu ’13 continued to show improvement.

The distance crew of the Hyde Phoenix opened their season in promising fashion, as they overcame the difficult mountain terrain and rugged Nordic course to win the opening meet of the 2012 MAISAD cross country season.  The meet was held on Saturday September 22nd at Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine.

Senior Isaac Preston ’12 (2nd overall) teamed with captain Cody Mitchell ’12 (fourth overall) to lead the charge. A strong finish by Austin Wang ’12 (7th overall) placed the team in position to seal the win.  Hyde’s pack of runners consisting of Griffin Palola ’13, Talin Rowe ’13 and Isaiah Mokeme ’13 ran together through most of the race. Hyde, placed 4 runners in the top 10 positions and 6 in the top 14 to run away with the meet.  Brian Edwards ’13 led Hyde’s JV runners. The Phoenix are the defending MAISAD Prep School Champions. They went undefeated last season.
