On a clear and warm fall afternoon in Woodstock, the Wolf Pack football team started off the 2012 season with a convincing 34-6 win over Evergreen League divisional rival Dexter School. After a scoreless first quarter, Hyde found the end-zone first when Jay Watkins ’13 scored on a long run. Ben Krassner ’13 added the extra point to give Hyde the early 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kick-off, Dexter responded and took it 85 yards to close the gap to 7-6.
Senior cornerback Tyquan Ekejiuba ’13 contributed a 70 yard interception return in the third quarter to stretch the lead and Watkins added two more scores in the second half. Daniel Palmer ’13 added a touchdown run of his own and Conor McLaughlin ’13 ran in the two point conversion to finish the scoring.
Defensively, Palmer was all over the field and registered roughly 15 tackles. Kyle O’Keefe ’14 intercepted a pass deep in Wolfpack territory at a critical juncture in the second half to stall a Dexter momentum shift. Quarterback Conor McLaughlin ‘13 had a great day at free safety, making tackles and batting down passes all afternoon.
When a team registers more than 300 yards rushing, special consideration must go out to the offensive line. Led by senior Greg Munetz ’13, the group of Michael Dore ’13, Joe Yanovitch ’13, Jon White ’14, and freshman Omri West ’16, opened holes and sustained blocks on a big Dexter defensive line.
Hyde looks forward to preparing for next week’s trip to Saxton’s River Vermont, to take on Vermont Academy.
