Hyde – 0

Berwick Academy – 5

It was a beautiful sunny day as the Phoenix opened their 2012 season on the turf hosting Berwick Academy.  Having squared off during the annual pre-season jamboree a week prior, the team was excited to play a full length match.  With the exception of a strong wind, conditions were perfect.

The Hyde team was slow to start and seemed tentative on the field during the first half.  Berwick took advantage of this, maintaining possession and dominating the play.  With less than five minutes on the clock, Berwick netted their first goal and went to score three more in the first half, one on a penalty kick.  The Hyde team’s defense was led by newcomer Hope Stinson ’14 who played an outstanding first half as sweeper.

The second half was a different game and despite being down a player, Hyde only allowed one additional Berwick goal.  Fifteen minutes into the half, Hyde went shorthanded and played the remaining twenty five minutes with only nine field players.  Having picked up the intensity, they were still able to significantly slow the Berwick team down.  Stand out efforts were turned in by Carolyn Moore ’14 at stopper, Shannon Ward ’14 in the mid-field and Olivia Griffing ‘14 at striker.
