Avon Old Farms 7 (2ot)
Hyde traveled to Avon Old Farms today in hopes of rebounding from the recent tough double overtime loss at the hands of Suffield Academy. Hyde came out firing in the opening minutes and quickly built a 2-0 lead off goals from Jared Larsen ’13 and Joe Yanovitch ’13. However, Avon Old Farms was not going to back down and put one in to end the first quarter 2-1 in Hyde’s favor. In the second quarter, goalie
Blake Smaldone ’12 made some key saves with the help of defensemen Ben Lieber ’12 and long stick mid-fielder Ethan Thoms ’12 but Avon managed to take a 3-2 lead with minutes to go in the first half. Thanks to a key face-off by Danny Gill ’12 Hyde was able to gain possession and score with a minute remaining in the first half to go into the break 3-3.
In the third quarter, Hyde’s attack scored three goals ( Alex Holland ’13, Larsen ’13 2x) to put Hyde ahead 6-3. Unfortunately, Hyde made some key defensive mistakes and Avon was able to even the score at 6-6 going into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter, was a stalemate with second half starting goalie Cullum Thompson ’12 making some key saves and the Avon goalie doing the same to send the game into sudden-death overtime. In the first overtime period, Hyde survived thanks to goalie Thompson ’12 point-blank saves to send the game into double OT. Unfortunately, Avon gained possession of the face-off and quickly put the game winner in the back of the net 53 seconds into the second over-time period. Once again, a tough loss and hopefully the boys can regroup and get back to their winning ways. Next up Falmouth Academy!
