Hyde vs. Suffield Academy
Suffield 10 (2ot)
Hyde hosted the Tigers of Suffield Academy today with hopes of gaining the Wolfpack’s first-ever win against the Western Connecticut lacrosse power. Suffield jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening minutes, but Hyde answered quickly with a beautiful goal from junior attackman Jared Larsen ’13, followed by a goal from Kevin McMorrow ’12 and Joe Yanovitch ’13 to take the lead 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. Hyde came out firing in the second quarter and thanks to face-off midfielder Danny Gill ’12, Hyde owned possession for the majority of the second period. Senior goalieCullum Thompson ’12, was stellar stopping plenty of face-break opportunities with help from defenseman Evan Dienstag ’12 and long-stick midfielder Ethan Thoms ’12. Hyde continued to shoot well and thanks to a diving goal from Rob O’Connor ’13 Hyde took the lead at the half 6-4.
In the third period, Hyde continued to own possession of the ball and Larsen ’13 once again took matters into his own hands and fired another shot by the Suffield goalie to put the Wolfpack ahead 7-4. Senior goalie Blake Smaldone ’12, took over in the second half and anchored the defense and frustrated the Suffield attack and held them scoreless for the majority of the third period. In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Hyde jumped out to a 9-4 lead with another Larsen ’13 goal ( 4 on the day) and a beautiful fast break finish from Yanovitch ’13. However, Suffield would not go away and in a five minute span scored four goals to bring the score to 9-8 with two minutes to play. Unfortunately, a costly turnover by the Wolfpack resulted in a Suffield goal and at the end of regulation the teams were deadlocked 9-9.
In sudden death overtime, thanks to Gill ’12 Hyde gained possession of the face-off and quickly called timeout to set up a play. Hyde came out after the timeout and executed Coach Kevin Folan’s play and Larsen ’13 fired a shot that hit the post and Suffield gained possession. Thanks to great defense, Hyde was able to stop Suffield and send the game into the second overtime.
Unfortunately, Suffield took control of the face-off and came down and scored 10 seconds into the second overtime to pull away 10-9. Obviously, the Hyde team was shocked but some great things did happen on the day and hopefully they can bounce back and avenge this tough loss. Next up Avon Old Farms!
