Hyde Wolfpack Boys Basketball Advances to Finals in Thrilling 62-55 Win vs. Hamden Hall

March 2, 2012

NEPSAC Class C Semifinals

(#5) Hyde Woodstock    62

At (#1) Hamden Hall       55

The Hyde Wolf Pack continued its march toward the NEPSAC Class C championship game on Sunday 4, March at 3:00PM at Avon Old Farms.  Last night, the boys varsity basketball team defeated Hamden Hall’s Hornets, the number one seed, in a thrilling, well-played game by both squads.  Captain Rob Lewis ’12 combined a mix of short jump shots and drives to the rim to help build a small lead in the first half.   However, it was the team’s defense that stymied the best efforts of Hamden Hall.  Christian Ejiga ’13 used his length to pull down rebounds, and Hyde’s guards kept penetration to a minimum.  As the teams battled for the lead, Jahvaney Beckford ’13 snuck into the passing lane and stole the ball for a breakaway dunk.  Hamden Hall redoubled its effort and began to make long range three point baskets; later in the half, Hamden Hall raised the energy of its home crowd by executing a thunderous alley-oop to their senior forward Darren Payen.  The Wolf Pack retreated to the locker room with a 29-26 point advantage over the Hornets.

When the game resumed, Hyde’s coach Tom Bragg had Evan Dienstag ’12 use his strength to deny Payen from receiving the ball in good scoring position.  Meanwhile, Chad Bryant ’13 heated up from beyond the arc, making four three point shots on his way to sixteen overall points in the half.  The Wolf Pack’s balanced offense continued to control the pace of the game, and its tenacious defense kept the Hornets from mounting a late game charge.  The Wolf Pack closed the scorebook with a 62-55 victory and will play Hebron Academy in the NEPSAC Class C championship.
